Been a While

I've been busy, busy, busy at work.

Here is a quick photoshop doodle I did during class (instead of paying attention) heck I get to this tipe of work so rarely now, that I figured it was a whise decision.

Conferences- Comic-Con, Siggraph, 5D

I've been quite busy in the last couple of months firs getting things ready for the Comic-Con and Sigghraph. No I did not have a booth at neither. But I'm looking into having a booth next year at the Con. What did I do there? Well I got to meet some really great and talented people extremely nice and willing to give feedback on my work. Much of the talent from the major studios is there, if they are not giving a panel presentation they are selling their personal work. If I were to be ask to give a word of advice to someone that wants to get into commercial art for entertainment the word would be go to conferences and meet the people. It really makes a difference being able to talk to them directly, and getting rid of the middle man, HR or Secretary. It's more immediate and natural.

I was also able to meet Alex McDowell a production designer that has worked on many lave action features as well as animation features. He helped put together a two day conference, 5D: The Future of Immersive Design, for designers that will be phenomenal. The way he explained to me is that the conference should work as a meeting ground for professional designers and aspiring ones, so that we can move forward. The conference will be at Cal State Long Beach, University Art Museum (UAM), (funny enough I used to work there). and it will be on October 4-5, 2008 here is the link to the conference

I hope to see some of you there.

Zoo as Reference

Here are some sketches that I made during my zoo visits. I've been lucky enough to going twice a week since the beginning of the year, a couple of hours each visit, but I can now start to see the benefit of those visits in my work.

These compositions were made using what I saw as reference material. I've been trying my best to use what I see as inspiration for design; it isn't always easy, specially when it comes to animals. If there isn't a physiological, and behavioral understanding of the subject things tend to fall apart. I find looking at animals not only relaxing but also fascinating each species has a specific behavior and every individual of that species has a specific attitude, it can be a bit chubbier, more aggressive, and with a scar. All that makes them unique just like each one of the people that we know. If one slows down and looks one will be amazed to discover what is right in front of our noses.

I'll be posting some more of my zoo sketches as in the near future.

Timmy and Terrance

During breakfast this weekend my girlfriend came up with a short story so today I did some sketches of the characters. Gouache is not my favorite medium but I wanted to try it out since many of the artist that I admire use it as one of their primary medium.

Got to Have Some Fun

Today I got to have some fun. Here are some of the doodles of the day. It was really freeing to be have the time to let thing flow out. Recently I've been doing work that is really detail oriented and rigid. This was such a treat!

Drawing Quadrupeds

I don't usually do, this but the moment I saw this material I had to make this post, and pass it on.  I've been looking for this kind of material for ages. So, if any of you are interested in drawing quadrupeds, you got to take a look at this material that Maichael Sporn posted on his blog. It's some great info that was put together for Disney animators during the production of Bambi. Trust me it's worth a look.

Truth

"Truth is truth which ever way you look at it." Kirstie Shepherd

Every once in a while while taking to friends a quote will come up. I write it down and then they get lost, sadly ennogh, so I figured I better put them in the same place.

Happy Easter

Digiatal Sketches

I was looking at a variety of blogs that is ussually an exellent way to charcge my battery. That led to a bunch of quick digital sketches, a stream of consciousness what ever came I drew. I was also trying to keep the image fresh. I'm good at killing an image by over working it. Now if I can just get the things in the right place at the first go... Wishful thinking.
